LETS National Conference is to be held in beautiful Perth, WA this year.

LETS members are invited to come and join us in WA from 9th to 11th September. Our West Australian LETS groups are hoping you’ll be interested in coming to our conference.

Besides conference activities that will take up the weekend, there is so much to see and do in the Perth area and beyond at this time of year: wildflowers, wineries in the Swan Valley and South-west country, nature touring, river excursions, coastal beaches & islands (Rottnest/Penguin Is./etc.), environmental centers, The Gravity/Cosmology Centre in Gingin (marvellous), new cultural/theatre complex in the city, etc, etc.

Discussions are underway to lower costs for attendees, and for interstate and country area people who want to extend their stay beyond the conference weekend for a few days/week.

We had an entertaining networking meeting at Annie’s home on May 28th.

Chell demonstrated Wu Tao, a dance form designed to stimulate the Chinese meridians. She danced 2 of the 5 dances, the Air and Water dances.

Annie had grown a huge pumpkin, which she sliced up and shared with all the people who came. Yum! Annie is our new Networking coordinator. If you would you like to host one of these afternoons call her.

Network afternoons are great opportunity to get to know other LETS members and find out what goods & services we can offer each other. There is always a trading table so you can bring along anything you would like to swap. There is also an opportunity to share what services and goods those attending are offering and wanting.

Display Board for Hire

We now have a display board for hire to members for 100 tokens per day.

There are 6 easy to assemble pieces, which make a 3-panel display board.

When assembled each panel measures 1500 H X 650 W giving a total of 1500 H X 2400 W when all 3 panels are joined. See photo below.

Local Food Swap

Transition Town Maroondah host a local food swap from 5pm on the 4th Sunday of each month at the East Ringwood Community Hall behind the main street (Railway Parade) in East Ringwood. This is followed by a shared meal (bring a plate) and then a monthly meeting which runs from 6-9pm.

Sustainable Living Festival ~ February 18th–20th, 2011

The annual Sustainable Living Festival is on again at Federation Square. We will be having a shared stall with four other LETS groups and need members to help out on the stall for 2-hour blocks between 10am & 6pm. You would need to talk to people about how LETS works and if necessary give out leaflets for the LETS group in their area.

Any time spent helping earns you tokens and you can have a look around the other stalls at the festival when you have finished. A great way to mix with like-minded people and maybe learn something new about living sustainably! There are lots to do in the city, so make a day of it.

Christmas BBQ Report

More than 20 WWLETS members celebrated Christmas at Ann’s house on 20^th November last year. The BBQ sizzled into the evening and everyone enjoyed the scrumptious salads and sweets! Not to mention the odd glass of wine or beer! The trading table offered the opportunity for some Christmas trading. It was great to see LETS members meeting each other for the first time, and many renewing old friendships.

Sustainable Gardening Australia (SGA) has begun organising Fruit/Veggie swaps. You can take your excess lettuce and swap them for plums or eggs. There are a growing number of these swaps beginning to happen. I have included the two that are closest to our area and one that occurs each week at CERES.

Home Grown Eggs

I was reading recently in the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) Magazine “Habitat” about the benefits of keeping chickens for the free-range eggs, which they lay. Apparently “research suggests that backyard eggs, compared to factory farm eggs, have 25% more Vitamin E, 1/3 more Vitamin A, 75% more beta carotene and significantly more Omega 3 fatty acids.” (Source: Habitat Vol 39 No 1,January 2011)

Of course they give an endless supply of manure too, which can be put to good use in the garden and is great for the veggies.

Keeping chooks is a wonderful addition to an eco-friendly lifestyle. And chooks make great pets. I spend hours watching mine in my backyard.

If you don’t want to keep your own, Jasminka offers biodynamic free-range eggs for trade. You couldn’t get any purer than that! Jasminka will also help with designing a chook house if you are thinking about getting some. Give her a call and try her yummy eggs.

60,107 tokens were traded between 1/4/09 and 31/3/10 (cf. 45,166 last year). This equals 1002 hours (that is 83 hours per month, 19 hours per week) or an average of 18 hours per active member. (A 33% increase from previous year)

383 (cf. 249 last year) transactions were recorded (not including administration levy and subscriptions) or 7 transaction per active member. Average transaction was for 126 tokens or just over two hours.

TOKENS FOR TRAVEL TIME

When trading, members may charge for travel time.

This needs to be discussed before the trade so everyone is on the same page.

If you want to include traveling to the venue, clearly state the time and the number of tokens you intend to charge in addition to the tokens for the trade when negotiating.

Compost and Worm Farm Workshops
